2009 BREAST CANCER 3•DAY

Breast Cancer 3Day-San Francisco-Oct. 2-4, 2009-1450 walkers-raised $3.8

The most important goal of this weekend was that Bob have a wonderful time. Mission accomplished! Ronda, Don and Diane came to help with
signage, and Lori, Dave, Nikki and Ashley came for support (and a little signage!). The people that joined us were something we had some control over, however, many things (most) that we have no control over worked out great: Bob had an appetite and was able to enjoy some SF
specialties, the route was interesting and challenging, and the weather was unbelievably fabulous every day.

So, about the walk.......this was probably one of the hilliest walks I have ever done.....Bob seemed to think it was THE hilliest walk. It seemed challenging but was fine so long as I just paced myself, which I do. I thought my 'buns' would be really sore today, but so far, nothing.....it may be that all of my walk 'potions' are not out of my system yet! I will know tomorrow or later in the day.

It was great seeing my 3Day staff friends since this was the first 3Day we have been able to do this year. Everyone has been very supportive.

The walk days were 18 miles, 22 1/2 miles, and 15 miles. My pedometer was very close to 60 miles by the time I got home last night.  Always a challenge. The walk started at the Cow Palace, camped at Chrissy Field and ended at the Marina Green. I particularly enjoyed walking through the Haight Ashbury district.

I spent all of the 3 days walking with Kent from Concord. We have been 'walk' buddies for several years. George, from MI, was also there. We also have been 'walk' buddies for many years. There is a story about George, who is 77 yrs. old, in the Why We Walk book.

I saw Cindy several times. She is a 3 time survivor from Chicago and her goal is to walk in every city. She is a 12 yr. survivor, and she has just reached her first 5 yr. mark. That is great. It was wonderful seeing you again.

I spoke with Emily. She had lots of questions.......so did I! She was walking for her sister in law Mary, who was diagnosed in Jan. When Emily began fundraising she told all of her family members that she usually buys gifts for their birthdays that this year she would make a donation in their honor to the 3Day. They all liked that idea and they made donations as well. She told them that they were her 'team' for the walk. I love her creative fundraising spirit. It was great meeting you Emily. Keep up the good work.

Met Mike from Dallas. He is a police office and appreciated the San Jose Police who were on the route (they support the SD and SF 3Day and
the SF Avon walks). Mike's wife is a 6 yr. survivor and they each pick a different walk so one of them is home with the children. He had never
been to SF and thought it would be a great place to vacation. Yes, it is absolutely a great vacation spot.

Maria, a 13 yr. survivor, was stalking everyone for 3 days with her whole 'hooker' crew of women. They are at both SF breast cancer walks are they are just a hoot and really play their parts well. On day 3 (Sunday) they are all in pajamas because they said they 'don't work on Sundays'. Thanks Maria for all of your love and concern. We look forward to seeing you next in SD.

Tanya was walking for several people including her aunt. Tanya has lost over 140 lbs., but not only that she has pins in her ankle....doesn't that sound like an incredible challenge? She was having a great time and was so enthused. Congratulations Tanya! You are making a difference.

I can't remember her name but I spoke with a young woman who was doing her 1st walk. She has 3 young children, works a full time job, manages her husband's business and managed to make time to do this. I saw her early in the walk and she was explaining why she didn't have time to train much......however, I saw her again on day 3 and she had already signed up for 2010. That is so impressive....she must be a fabulous time manager!

It was good to see Courtney of Pink Wings (check out her website) selling her wonderful breast cancer merchandise. She is a 2 time survivor and is celebrating her 13th yr. of survivorship. I am glad you enjoyed your room at the hotel and some time to yourself.

At the airport we were talking to Steve, who lives in our area. He asked to donate and I gave him my card and a fundraising letter. That would be wonderful if he does that. That just reminded me that on our flight to SF the flight attendant, Jill, was a survivor and had done the SD walk a few years ago. When I did my first walk 12 yrs. ago, no one knew about any 'long distance' walks for breast cancer, and now there probably isn't anyone who doesn't know about the walks that Komen and Avon are producing in the fight against breast cancer. At least that awareness is being raised.

Pretty Woman Guy (Phil) and Lynn were visible in their black truck all over the route on Sun. I saw them each on Fri. I know they searched me
out and that felt special. I can't help it if everyone else probably thought that he was playing 'pretty woman' music for them! It is amazing these special relationships I feel that we have made with our 'walk family'. Phil and Lynn have done so much to raise awareness and support the long distance walks for breast cancer. Lynn is a survivor and I say 'yea' for that.....Love you both.....thank you so much for your personal support.

Thank you for reading this journal and keep checking in since we are still planning on walking and signing!
