Dear Friends,

I became involved with walking and fundraising for the fight against breast cancer in 1998 when I read about a 3day walk (60miles) in Santa Barbara.  That was the year I turned 60 years old and I wondered if I could walk for 3 days.  That was the beginning of what became a 20 year challenge/adventure.  Since that time my children and grandchildren have all been involved too.  My husband, Bob, supported me from the beginning and when I began doing multiple events around the country (as many as 15 walks in a year) he traveled with me.  When Bob was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2009 he told me he wanted me to keep raising money for the fight against breast cancer because some of that research was helping other cancers. Bob passed away in 2010 and I have continued walking and raising money as he asked me.   In the last 20 years I have walked in 151 long distance walks for breast cancer (almost 8000 miles) and raised over $2,100,000.  Since the walks that I had been doing have been discontinued it seemed natural to see if the San Antonio Regional Hospital/Womenís Breast and Imaging Center, my local hospital,  could use a grassroots fundraiser. They were excited to have me to that! 100% of what I raise will go to WBIC. 100% of what I raise will help the underserved.  To continue with my story:  when Bob was finishing his medical residency at L.A. County Hospital and he was looking for a place to open his practice he came to SACH in Upland, one beautiful, smog free day and came home and said he had decided where to practice!  He fell in love with the hospital that afternoon.  I have always looked at this hospital as the reason we moved to Upland, so raising money for this breast center allows me to continue Bobís legacy in this community.

For those of you who do not live locally I will say this has always been about helping others fighting breast cancer wherever they lived.  This money will not be going for research but if you want to support research, please contact me and I will be happy to share with you the organization I support for breast cancer research.

If you have any fundraising you would like to do with me please get in touch with me.  If you need a speaker give me a call!  If you have a network you would like to send letters to, contact me! If you would like to read the journals of any of my walks over the last 20 years please check out my website:  Letís all work to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

In the 2 minutes it has taken you to read this letter, one more woman has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Please fill out the enclosed form and include your check or credit card information. Mail that to me in the enclosed envelope.   You can also go on line to my website: and click to donate directly to SARH and reference WBIC/Barbara jo.                           .

I thank you in advance for your support as I move forward in my 21st year of fundraising for the fight against breast cancer.

Remember to do your self- exams and regular mammograms.  Remember that men get breast cancer too.

With appreciation,

Barbara Jo Kirshbaum
